Located along the banks of the Ganges, in the city of Varanasi, this riverfront is lined with step designed to help Hindu pilgrims perform their rituals. Although the city has been in existence for more than 2000 years, its current form is the result of growth in the past 500 years. Almost all structures here are hundreds of years old. Tiny courtyards can be seen dotting the otherwise packed area. Narrow alleyways that permeate the built form all lead to the ghats.
