Kainakary, Allapuzha

This is paddy grown through basin irrigation on a vast scale. Farmers in Kerala take advantage of the state�s vast back water system. They divide their land into linear rectangles with earth bunds, and flood them. Hundreds of such rectangles can be seen in the image. The larger shapes thus formed are strengthened by even larger bunds, about 10 m wide. These area used to get around the farms, and the water channels thus formed are used of navigation.
